Reuters Health – Consuming too much choline, a nutrient sold in over-the-counter dietary supplements, can boost the risk for blood clots, researchers warn. Choline is found in a variety of foods including meat, eggs and milk. Stanley L. Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, in a statement. Hazen and colleagues had previously shown that bacteria in the intestines interact with choline and other dietary nutrients to produce a substance called TMAO, and they linked high levels of TMAO in the blood to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Also, in studies in animals, they linked higher levels of TMAO to a higher risk for blood clots. In the current study, they gave oral choline supplements to 18 volunteers and then measured TMAO levels, along with the responses of platelets, tiny particles involved in clotting. After taking the supplements for up to two months, participants had more than fold increases in blood levels of TMAO. The tendency of their platelets to clump together and form clots was also significantly increased, in direct proportion to the increases in TMAO levels. The findings are of particular concern in people at high cardiovascular risk, whose increased risk of blood clots may not be overcome by low-dose aspirin.
Before I started writing about my blood journey, I wrote about my weight-loss journey. Before I was diagnosed with a DVT and PE, I was diagnosed with insulin resistance as a pre-cursor to diabetes, which motivated me to make changes in my life related to nutrition and fitness. I started running half marathons and eating better — and I eventually reversed the damage being done to my body and came off insulin-sensitivity drugs.
There are a number of foods and other factors that are known to clot the blood. In the past I had bleeding problems for most of my life – heavy periods, nosebleeds, an eye hemorrhage, ovarian pain, blood in my urine, and easy bruising. When I would get injured as a child the copious amount of blood around the injury was sometimes really scary over what would turn out to be a relatively minor wound. Over time I realized that I could control my bleeding simply by changing my diet. These days my coagulation is kept under control simply by avoiding foods and other factors that thin the blood and ingesting more of the foods listed below that clot my blood. Based on articles in the media, it seems like my issues may be in the minority and that a greater number of people suffer from blood clots. Hypercoagulation and cancer are linked disorders. Researchers often assume that cancer causes blood to clot too much. However I’ve read that in traditional Chinese medicine, a somewhat opposite belief is held – that poor circulation causes cancer. Click here for more on information on my ideas on blood thinners and cancer treatment and prevention. The main nutrient involved in blood clotting is vitamin K, which was named “K” for the Danish word for coagulation. Humans obtain vitamin K from two main sources: 1 the food that we eat; and 2 synthesis by intestinal bacteria.
